Out of Order Signs on Laptop Vending Machines

Hi Reference Team!

Please refrain from placing Out of Order signs on the Laptop Vending Machines unless you first submit a Systems Work Request or at the very least post on here explaining the situation.

There were signs on the machines when I came in this morning and when Chris called to ask me why, I did not have an answer for him. When he looked at the machines, they were operational.

Submitting a Systems Work Request helps expedite the repair process and also helps answer any questions that someone may have.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all about the process.

Thank you!

Christy

READ 4309 Personal Narrative Picture Books

Students in READ 4309, Reading Across the Curriculum, with Dr. Laurie Sharp, need to check out a personal narrative picture book.  I have left a stack of these on the lower level reference desk in case any students come in looking for one this evening or weekend. - Amanda

HIST 1301 Scavenger Hunt

I just helped a girl upstairs with her HIST 1301 scavenger hunt. They have to access a couple of different online databases, including ProQuest Historical Newspapers. They also have to find one of a list of books on US history and copy an entry out of the bibliography. I showed her how to look up books and find things on the shelves. I don't think it's going to be one that gives the students too many problems, but I thought y'all might like a heads up that it's floating around.

Dr. Tanter's Tech Comm - Blue Bell Assignment

Please refer to the following communications when helping with this assignment.

Dr. Tanter’s Tech Comm class has an assignment to look for information regarding the Blue Bell recall from a consumer perspective & business/gov perspective (I believe they choose one of those 2 areas). I’ve worked with 2 students so far to look for print articles covering this, however, as you can imagine there’s not going to much in print other than newspapers due to the currency of this (too soon for scholarly articles I’m afraid). I have pulled 3 newspaper issues of Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, & Washington Post with dates in April & September that have an article relating to the withdrawal and reintroduction of the ice cream. I believe they also need info from the Blue Bell website & FDA since they are allowed to use a couple of internet based sources as well.

Anyway, thought I would give you a heads up about the newspaper issues. They are located behind the Periodicals Service Desk with a note to hold them till next week. The assignment is supposedly due this upcoming Sunday but I also was told it was due 10/2 so maybe this is for more than 1 class.

I’ve been a Blue Bell Club member for 10 years.  On their website, they have 10 press releases posted, starting September 1, 2015.

Don’t know that the news relates to their assignment, but it’s another place to look.

KIC Scanner in Periodicals Area

Hi Reference Team!

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that the KIC scanner located in the Periodicals area will be out of order until we receive a new replacement scanner.

Chris estimated that the new scanner should be in place on Monday.

Please direct students to the KIC scanner on the upper level and let me or the Systems Department know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Christy

Quick Reminder about Out of Order Signs

Hey Team,

Just a quick reminder about Out of Order signs. Please, do a Reference blog post or send an email to those that work the Reference desk letting us/them know what the issue with the machine is and if you put in a systems work request. This morning, we found an Out of Order sign on the printer in Periodicals and no one knew what the issue was. Chris also never received a work request. It is really important to communicate these things, so we can all be on the same page and to better help our users. :) If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Christy, Jodie, Vickie, or me, we would be glad to help.

CII Emergency Alarm

Hi Reference Team,

Leslie has just dropped off a key that will disable the new alarm on the CII door. It is on a key fob labeled Emergency Alarms CII. I have placed it in the KEYS tin at the Reference desk.

When Sending Someone to the Lower Level....

....please, if you told someone a particular item was downstairs, please send them here with a title, call number, and location (a single call number could potentially be in about 20 different places down here (7 different item types in AV, 5 in Curriculum, etc.).

Just now a student came down and said she was told there was a dictionary she could check out down here.  Well yes, we have some children's dictionaries and a few specialty dictionaries (in Limited and the Curriculum Reference collection - so they can't be checked out), but she needed a college-level dictionary for an Accuplacer test she was taking in 15 minutes.

There IS one she could check out in Stacks, but given the time already wasted, I ended up giving her my personal dictionary to use during the test.

So please - help me out downstairs, and when you send a student here, write down the title, call number, and location (AV Collection, Curriculum Collection, Government Documents, etc.) of the item you found for them in the catalog or Discovery.

Thanks!

Library Assignment

Hi Reference Team!

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that students are coming to the desk looking for handouts, bookmarks, floor plans, etc. for an assignment that they must complete over the library. I had one student ask me for 25 floor plans so I'm currently cutting some out for the upper level desk. There was another student who wanted to learn more about the library catalog and asked to speak with the Catalog Librarian. It sounds like they may have assigned sections about the library to report on for the class.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Thanks,

Christy
